Lucy the Elephant - Margate, New Jersey
Lucy the Elephant is a wooden, 65-foot tall, 90 ton, elephant facing the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors enter through her hind legs where they are able to view her newly restored interiors. Constructed in 1881 as a tourist attraction, Lucy has remained as such despite a short period of time when she was used as a home and then tavern. She’s survived hurricanes, a fire and a two block move. In 1976 Lucy was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours of Lucy’s interior are only available May through mid-June.
